Konavle takes its name from a plumbing project. The Latin canalis described the Roman aqueduct that carried water from the Ljuta spring down to Epidaurum, the coastal colony now called Cavtat. Fragments of the channel still lie under the fields.

The Republic of Ragusa acquired Konavle in two transactions, in 1419 and 1426, and ran it as a granary. Patrician families of Dubrovnik held the land; local farmers worked it under contract. The stone hamlets that followed — Radovčići, Gruda, Čilipi, Ljuta — were built to one grammar: dry-stone walls, cypress rows, vaulted ground floors for animals, living quarters above. Sokol Grad, the fortress wedged into a karst outcrop above Dunave, guarded the eastern approach; its restoration was completed in 2013. Working horses moved grain, olives and timber along paths too narrow for carts.
The valley's other export was ornament. Women raised silkworms on mulberry leaves and stitched konavoski vez, the geometric red-and-black embroidery, onto linen; the costume it belongs to is still worn at Sunday gatherings in Čilipi. Along the Ljuta, water mills ground grain and fulling stocks beat cloth. Vineyards brought back Malvasija Dubrovačka, a white grape almost lost in the twentieth century. Much of Konavle burned in 1991 and was rebuilt stone by stone across the decade that followed. Konavle horseback riding, jahanje konja to the families who have always done it, runs against that background of repair rather than preservation.
Kojan Koral stands at Radovčići 1, on the Gruda side of the valley, where trails climb out of cultivated ground into scrub oak and open karst. From the higher turns the coast appears in segments: Cavtat white on its peninsula, the bay at Molunat, the Elaphiti islands as haze to the north-west.
